Here at Custom Auto Electrics we can supply and fit an electronic ignition to a huge range of vehicles. These unit simply replace the points and the entire installation is hidden. No ugly control boxes and no need to adjust points again! Perfect to keep your car looking original. We use quality Ignitor® Kits by Pertronix.

Ignitor® I

Ignitor® I is a solid-state electronic ignition system that replaces your points and condenser. It fits completely within the distributor housing, under the distributor cap. With no 'external black box' to clutter your engine compartment or compromise your 'stock-look' classic, the Ignitor® I allows you to "Hide some horses under your cap!".

What do I get in the Ignitor® I Kit box?

A moulded epoxy 'module' that is either mounted, or can be mounted on a base plate designed for a specific distributor. Two wires from the module connect to the coil.  A 'magnet ring' or 'magnet assembly' which mounts on the shaft of your distributor. (Note: Only for Hall Effect Type kits. Not included in Lobe Sensing kits, as not necessary). Instructions, Warranty Information, Additional Information and any screws, nuts, washers or terminals required to install your particular unit.

How does the Ignitor® I work?

The ignitor I comes in once of two forms, Hall Effect Type or Lobe Sensing Type.

Hall Effect Type
The 'magnet assembly' included in your kit will be mounted on the shaft over the lobes, and is designed to fit your original distributor exactly. The assembly contains cobalt magnets which rotate with the shaft, triggering the electronic switching module (Hall Effect integrated circuit) as each magnet passes.

Lobe Sensing Type
Th
ese types of kits do not require a 'magnet assembly'. The module itself senses the point of each lobe as it passes. These are usually the best option for distributors which may have obstructions preventing a magnet assembly from fitting properly, to prevent the need for machining the shaft.

How well does the Ignitor® I work?

The performance of an Ignitor® I is dependent on all of the components in your Ignition system. For better performance, you must ensure that these components are in good condition, including the distributor cap, rotor button, spark plug leads, spark plugs, ground connections etc. Most issues with installation come from old or degraded wiring. That said, we are very pleased with the feedback received from our customers over the years.

Some customers report horsepower and/or fuel economy increases beyond their expectations. Others report no real increases, but claim that the fast starts first time, every time, the reliability and the benefits of never having to change points again or perform minor tune-ups is well worth it.
In an unsolicited test, a mild 350 Chev with moderate engine modifications and a Mallory Twin-Point Distributor recorded a benchmark dyno run of 195hp at the wheels (ATW). After installing the Ignitor® and a Flame-Thrower® Coil, making no other adjustments and every attempt to duplicate the test conditions, the vehicle recorded 205hp ATW!!!! That's a 10hp or 5% gain just by bolting in the Ignitor® and a compatible Flame-Thrower® coil!!!

Recommendations:

Custom Auto Electrics ALWAYS supply's a matching Flame Thrower® I coil to suit. This is to get the maximum effect of the conversion.
We highly recommend replacing the High Tension Leads (spark plug leads). We recommend using Eagle Leads.
We also highly recommend replacing the Spark Plugs. We recommend using NGK spark plugs.
















Flame Thrower® I - 40,000 Volt High Performance Ignition Coils

What a better way to complete and compliment your ignition upgrade than with the Flame-Thrower® 40,000 volt High Performance Coil. The Flame-Thrower® coil has been designed to achieve the optimal performance out of the Ignitor®, or any inductive ignition system for that matter.  Available in either Black or Chrome!

The Flame-Thrower® High Performance Coil maximises energy and reliability over the full RPM range, delivering more spark energy and voltage. This enables you to run larger plug gaps in your vehicle for greater fuel efficiency and more power!! This graph shows the percent of extra available voltage over an Original Equipment Coil and typical aftermarket performance coil.

















Ignitor® II

The Ignitor® II takes the Ignitor® technology a step further by adding a powerful new micro-controller that controls the dwell period, for the best possible spark over the entire RPM range. The Ignitor® II offers enhanced performance levels only found in more expensive "box type" ignition systems. As with the original Ignitor®, the Ignitor® II is a solid-state electronic ignition system that replaces your points and condenser, fitting completely within the distributor housing, under the cap. There is still no "external black box" to clutter your engine compartment.t.

What do I get in an Ignitor® II Kit Box?

An Ignitor® II kit is the same as the original, but with a RED module. You still get a moulded epoxy 'module' that is either mounted, or can be mounted on a base plate designed for a specific distributor. Two wires from the module connect to the coil. A 'magnet ring' or 'magnet assembly' which mounts on the shaft of your distributor. (Note: Only for Hall Effect Type kits. Not included in Lobe Sensing kits, as not necessary). Instructions, Warranty Information, Additional Information and any screws, nuts, washers or terminals required to install your particular unit.

How do Ignitor® II Kits work?

The same way as the original Ignitor®, but the Ignitor® II senses current levels at the coil and adjusts the dwell to maintain peak energy throughout the entire RPM range. Dwell angle is increased or decreased with changing engine RPM and operating conditions. This provides more energy at high RPM, reducing misfires while improving engine performance.

Hall Effect Type
The 'magnet assembly' included in your kit will be mounted on the shaft over the lobes, and is designed to fit your original distributor exactly. In Ignitor® I section, we talked about a dyno test performed on a mild 350 Chev with moderate engine modifications and a Mallory Twin-Point Distributor that recorded a benchmark dyno run of 195hp at the wheels (ATW). After installing the Ignitor® and a Flame-Thrower® Coil, the vehicle recorded 205hp ATW!!!! That was a 10hp or 5% gain just by bolting in the Ignitor® and a compatible Flame-Thrower® coil!!!

Next an Ignitor® II unit was installed. Unfortunately, a Flame-Thrower® II Coil was not available for the test, so a typical transistor type coil was used instead. Even without the Flame-Thrower® II coil, the vehicle recorded 211hp ATW with the Ignitor® II installed, with marked improvements in both power and torque. That's 16hp or an 8% gain over the original twin point setup!-

Recommendations:

Flame Thrower II 45,000 Volt High Performance Ignition Coils

Whilst the Flame-Thrower® I - 40,000 volt High Performance Coil is designed for the original Ignitor® and other inductive ignition systems, the Flame-Thrower® II - 45,000 volt High Performance Coil has been designed for use with not only the Ignitor® II, but is also compatible with capacitive discharge (CD box) systems. Available in Black or Chrome!

The Flame-Thrower® II High Performance Coil has a super low 0.6 ohm primary resistance, giving you more than four times the spark energy compared to points. Tests conducted show a 479% improvement over points at 3,000 RPM for an eight cylinder vehicle. That's a whole lot of spark energy, enabling you to run larger plug gaps in your vehicle for greater fuel efficiency and more power!!

Digital Rev Limiter

The Digital Rev Limiter is designed for use with any 4, 6 or 8 cylinder engine using points, OEM electronic (GM HEI, Ford, Chrysler) or aftermarket inductive type ignition systems including the popular Ignitor® I and Ignitor® II points replacement systems.

This digitally controlled, microcontroller based unit provides much greater accuracy (+/- 0.01%) than analogue systems. Digital rotary switches permit easy setting and a resolution of 100 RPMs for more accurate rev control, eliminating the need for chips and jumpers. Random spark stealing starts within one spark at the moment when the rev limit is exceeded, reducing plug fouling common with repetitive stealing type limiters. The Digital Rev Limiter comes with two analogue filters and one digital filter to prevent coil (-ve) voltage noise. A tachometer output with TTL interface and near 50% duty cycle make the limiter compatible with modern tachometers. With reverse voltage protection, the limiter works well over a wide voltage range (6 to 18 volts). Installation is a snap with a four wire hookup and easy to understand instructions. The rev limiter's small size permits installation in even the most crowded engine compartment.
The cost of the Digital Rev Limiter is a small price to pay for insurance against major damage to your expensive performance (or even run-about) engine.

Ignitor® II Kits are not available for all vehicles. Ignitor® III available for a limited number of vehicles (primarily performance American models). Ignitor® kits also available for some aftermarket distributors (eg. Mallory).
